U.S. Mint Uncirculated Coin Set
The 1987 Mint Set (Buy on eBay) experienced a surge in collector interest following lackluster sales of the past three years. Total sales reached 2,890,758, more than doubling the prior year sales. In fact, it was more than the combined Mint Set sales for 1985 and 1986
The increased level of sales for the present set was attributable to the 1987 Kennedy Half Dollar. The denomination was not struck for circulation during the year, making the annual Mint Set the only way to obtain the coins. This same situation had occurred for the 1970 Mint Set, but collectors did not realize the lack of production for circulation until after the fact.
There were ten coins included in each 1987 Mint Set. This consisted of the “P” and “D” mint marked half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and cents for the year. Besides the half dollar, the other denominations had been issued in typical quantities for circulation. Each set also included mint tokens from Philadelphia and Denver.
Envelopes for the mint set were brightened up from prior years, with white and red colors separated by a blue stripe. The US Treasury Department logo appears on the upper portion with “THE UNITED STATES MINT,” “1987 Uncirculated Coin Set,” and “WITH D AND P MINT MARKS” on the lower portion.
